So, I am trying out the beta for Eeebuntu 4. So far, it seems to run okay. Hardware works out of the box, though it doesn’t seem to scale my CPU anymore (I’m using an Asus eeePC 701). Other than that, everything seems fine.
For some reason ifconfig/iwconfig seem to be missing. Hopefully those would come back in the final release. Also, I had to manually install some software (maximus, window-picker-applet, netbook-launcher, pidgin, rhythmbox, etc.). I’m sure the first three will be in the final release. Pidgin will probably be replaced with Empathy. As for the media player that comes with Eeebuntu by default (Banshee), I don’t really like that. There’s one thing that just plain turns me off from it, and that is the (apparent) inability to use a network share to add music to the library. Rhythmbox does that without a problem.
A couple glitches that I noticed:
- gnome-panel would become invisible whenever I have netbook-launcher running. I don’t know why that happens.
- When I have a background image in gnome-terminal, it tiles itself.
Also, when installing eb4 onto my netbook, I had a problem getting Grub set up. I managed to work around it somehow. I don’t know what I did, but I made it work.
I’ll post more about my experiences with the beta over time. Despite the quirks, it’s been satisfactory so far.
